Why 'Hurricane Cutting' Your Palms Is Dangerous — and What to Do Instead

Drive around Sarasota before hurricane season and you'll see plenty of palms with nothing left but a bare trunk and a small tuft of fronds at the very top, cut into a look sometimes called a hurricane cut or a Florida frizzle. It's marketed by some low-cost crews as storm preparation. It isn't — the practice is discouraged by University of Florida IFAS extension guidance and by ISA-certified arborists, because it does more harm to the palm than the storm risk it claims to reduce.

Here's what actually happens to a palm when it's over-pruned this way, and what proper pre-season palm care looks like instead.

What 'Hurricane Cutting' Actually Is

Hurricane cutting refers to stripping a palm of all fronds except a small cluster at the very top, well beyond removing dead or declining growth. The theory homeowners are sold is that fewer fronds mean less wind resistance and a lower chance of the canopy failing in a storm. In practice, the fronds a healthy palm carries contribute relatively little wind load compared to the trunk itself, and the areas of a palm most likely to fail in extreme wind — the crown and the trunk — aren't meaningfully protected by removing healthy green fronds.

Why It Actually Weakens the Palm

Palms grow from a single point called the apical meristem, or bud, at the very top of the trunk. Unlike a hardwood tree, a palm can't regenerate a damaged growing point or push out new branches from elsewhere on the trunk if the bud is harmed.
